EPANA S.A.
EP.AN.A. S.A. is active in the recovery-recycling of packaging materials. Since 2008 the company has a modern Material Recovery Facility located in the municipality of Fyli. The modern recycling facility was inaugurated in May 2009. The facility is built on a plot of total surface 28.300 m2 and it is owned by EP.AN.A S.A.
The Material Recovery Facility of EP.AN.A processes municipal waste packaging and commercial and industrial waste, with a processing capacity of 100.000 tons per year.
The recovered recyclable materials include packaging waste such as cardboard, paper, various types of plastic, ferrous metals, glass and tetrapack. After recovery, the materials are baled and temporarily stored until they are directed to final recyclers for recycling and re-use. At the same time, the unit is able to produce secondary solid fuel, which can be used to replace conventional fuels in energy-intensive industries (e.g. cement factories or power plants).
The unit in operation covers a significant part of the needs of the Basin, as it accommodates many municipalities.
With its operation, the plant contributes to the elimination of packaging waste that were previously landfilled, increasing the lifetime duration of the sanitary landfills.
With the recovery of marketable recyclable materials and their transport for recycling, significant natural resources and energy are saved, while at the same time a new market for secondary products is developed, providing new business opportunities.
The creation of new Material Recovery Facilities such as the EP.AN.A’s unit, is a prerequisite for the integrated waste management, given that recycling and reusing recovered materials, hovers in the hierarchy of the European Union Waste Framework Directve.
Finally, the efforts made by municipalities in the direction of maximizing the collection of recyclable materials is completed by ensuring their processing in modern Material Recovery Facilities and the recovery of marketable materials. In this way, the objectives set by the European Union are achieved and the levels of recycling are increased, ensuring the conservation of natural resources and saving energy and resources.
