The visit of delegation members of the Federation of Hellenic Recycling and Energy Recovery Industries to Brussels was crowned with particular success, as guests of Nea Dimokratia’s MEP and member of European People’s Party Mr. Giorgos Koumoutsakos.
The institutional meetings that were held, gave the opportunity to the delegation members to state their proposals in the responsible representatives of the European bodies according to the Federation’s views.
Particularly in the meeting with Dr. Dagmara Koska, member of the Cabinet of European Commissioner responsible for Energy Efficiency G.H. Oettinger, dominant subject was the Directive on the Energy Efficiency through the problems that faced by industries, their modern needs, but also the emerging challenges in this issue. There was a significant indication on the necessity of SRF-RDF utilization, as well as the environmental and economic consequences of non utilization.
In the meeting with Julio Garcia Burgues, Head of the Waste Management UNIT in DG Environment, there was a briefing on the figures representing the map of urban waste in Attica, but also the most important areas of Greece (Western Macedonia, Eastern Thrace, Peloponnese), as for the important issues facing the waste management model in our country: bureaucracy, location, expanded state intervention, local community opposition, incompetence in implementation of EU legislation by the state administrative authorities.
The discussions, which included both the Legal Advisor and Special Assistant of the Waste Management UNIT, was a good opportunity for members of the Commission to accept the proposal of SEVIAN’s members to attend the scheduled workshop on the management of industrial waste to be held in Greece in 2012.
At the same time, the members of SEVIAN’s delegation had the opportunity of meeting with the European Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Mrs Maria Damanaki, with whom they discussed the problems of industries in Greece, citing the particular solutions to the issues the questions of the solid and industrial waste management.
Finally, in the lunch held with the MPs of Nea Demokratia party, a number of important topics of the Greek recycling and energy recovery industries were discussed and decided to create an effective ongoing communication tool, particularly with Mr. Koumoutsakos becoming a representative in the committee of Environment of the European Parliament.
