For the first time, scientists, environmental organizations, local authorities, political and business representatives, sat on the same table and expressed their views.
The multi-topic range of this workshop, which was broadcasted over the biggest internet portals in the form of live streaming, gave the opportunity to bind the mixture of all the approaches that range from waste recycling and sorting to the incineration of waste.
The Minister of Interior Affairs, Mrs Theodora Tzakri, who welcomed the workshop noted that illegal dump sites will close until the end of the year. She also mentioned that the European Commission examines the possibility to impose a fine to Greece if the plan for the management of waste will be implemented throughout the country.
The Parliamentary Member of PASOK party, Mr. Costas Kartalis stressed that “the revision of Regional Planning will extend the problem for even more years, while the Parliamentary Member of LAOS party Mr. Makis Voridis noted that “ only with a certain political will, the Regional Planning can be reviewed ”.
The Mayor of the city of Fili, Mr. Dimitris Bouraimis raised the problem of the use of offsets from the management of waste of Attica, while the Mayor of Salonika Mr. Giannis Boutaris challenged the capability of the city to regulate its waste.
The event took the form of debate in five topics, related to the implementation of Regional Planning, the relation between Market and State, the boundaries of recycling-composting as opposed to the energy recovery and finally the coexistence of Local Communities and Waste Management Facilities.
